Panel PC or Monitor Plus Box PC: Which HMI Architecture Fits Your Line?
Every operator station comes down to the same architectural choice: one integrated unit that combines display and computer, or a screen and a separate box PC connected by cable.
Both work. They fail differently, cost differently over a service life, and suit different installations. The decision is worth making deliberately rather than by habit.
The Integrated Panel PC
A panel PC puts the display, the touch sensor and the computer in one sealed enclosure, panel-mounted into a cabinet door, a machine housing or a pedestal.
What it gives you. One part to specify, one to stock, one to install. A single cut-out and a single set of fixings. One power connection instead of two. No video or USB cable between display and computer — which removes the most common source of intermittent HMI faults on a vibrating machine. And, where it matters, a rated front panel: an IP65 fascia on models such as the ITPC-A113, ITPC-A500 and ITPC-A600 protects the whole assembly in one boundary rather than requiring you to seal around two separate items.
The installation itself is faster and more repeatable, which matters when you are building twenty machines rather than one.
What it costs you. Coupling. The display and the computer now share a lifecycle. If the processor becomes inadequate in four years, you replace a working screen alongside it. If a backlight fails, the computer goes out of service with it.
It also constrains the thermal design: the computer sits directly behind a panel that generates its own heat, in a sealed enclosure, and the whole assembly has to shed that through its surface. And screen size is bounded by what exists as an integrated product — our range runs to 21.5" with the ITPC-A215C, which covers the great majority of operator stations but not a large overview display.
The Separated Architecture
Here a commercial display or industrial touch monitor is mounted at the operator position, and a box PC is mounted elsewhere — inside the cabinet, under the bench, on the wall — connected by video and USB.
What it gives you. Independence. Replace the computer without touching the screen; replace the screen without recertifying the computer. Choose any screen size, including sizes no integrated product offers. Site the computer where it is thermally comfortable and physically accessible, rather than where the operator needs to look.
It also allows a single computer to drive multiple displays. A machine with an operator screen and a separate status display can run both from one N3322 with three 4K outputs, or an N1021 with HDMI plus dual DisplayPort.
And it suits awkward geometry: a screen flush in a thin door, with the computer 1.5 metres away inside the cabinet, is straightforward here and impossible with an integrated unit.
What it costs you. Cables, and the faults they produce. A video cable and a USB cable running through a hinge, a cable chain or a vibrating machine will eventually fail — and when they do, the symptom is intermittent, not absolute, which is the worst kind of fault to diagnose. Cable length limits apply: HDMI over long runs needs active cabling, and USB beyond five metres needs an extender.
It is also two seals instead of one. Achieving a rated boundary around a separately mounted monitor and a separately mounted computer requires more design effort than a single panel-mount unit.
The Decision, Made Concrete
Choose integrated when:
- The screen is 21.5" or smaller
- The installation is a machine, a cabinet door or an enclosed pedestal
- A rated front panel is required
- The unit is one of many identical builds
- Cable runs would pass through a hinge, a chain or a vibrating structure
- Assembly time and part-count matter
Choose separated when:
- The screen is larger than integrated options allow
- Display and computer have genuinely different replacement cycles
- One computer drives several screens
- The computer must sit somewhere thermally or physically different from the screen
- Field service means swapping a computer without dismantling an enclosure
- The display is a commercial panel already specified for other reasons
The Cost Comparison People Get Wrong
On a bill of materials, the two architectures often land within a few percent of each other. The difference shows up over a service life, and it shows up in two places.
Installation labour. One cut-out, one power connection and no inter-unit cabling is measurably faster, and the saving multiplies across a build of any size.
Failure and replacement. Here it reverses. When a separated system fails, you replace the failed half. When an integrated system fails, you replace both halves — and if the failure is a backlight after five years, you are discarding a perfectly good computer with it.
Which dominates depends on how many units you are building and how long they stay in service. High volume and a short lifecycle favour integration. Low volume and a fifteen-year installation favour separation.
The Requirements Both Share
Whichever architecture you choose, the same things determine whether the HMI is usable:
Touch technology matched to the operator. Gloves and water point to resistive; gestures and public use point to capacitive.
Brightness matched to the lighting. A 250 cd/m² panel near a window is unreadable. Anti-glare treatment and higher brightness are specified from the installation, not from a preference.
Fanless construction. Dust and vibration make fans a liability in either architecture.
Serial I/O where the machinery needs it. RS-232/422/485 for existing controllers, natively rather than through a USB adapter.
Wide-voltage DC input where an industrial supply feeds the cabinet, typically 9–36 V.
Mounting that suits the site. Panel-mount, VESA, wall, desktop or DIN rail — and the clearance for passive cooling to work.
